Way of the Creepy

September 23rd, 2006

So, living in the South has seriously changed my perspectives on a lot of things — most importantly, Christianity (not Jesus, but how our relationship with Him should change our lives) and patriotism.

To say it quickly and simply, I’ve grown… if not disgusted with, at least tired of most of the outward signs of Christianity and of patriotism. There’s something about the uneducated South (note: this is not calling Southerners uneducated. This is distinguishing between the uneducated South and the uneducated in the rest of the US) that places value on outward demonstration of one’s ideals — often without having those ideals affect one’s life. It’s too late for me to articulate this well, but suffice it to say that things like Ray Comfort’s Way of the Master and political arguments (such as many of Michelle Malkin and friends’ videos) containing constant American flags and references to America which previously wouldn’t have bothered me now do — horribly. People in Michigan have noticed my aversion to these things, thinking something about me has changed. I still love God, I still would rather live in America than anywhere else. Just try living here for a few years, though, and see how you feel.
