I have to figure out whether or not to audition for the Urbana ’09 worship team. Here’s what I have so far:
Pros:
- Playing bass in front of 22,000 people
- Playing and worshiping with an amazing set of musicians, writing new music, playing all sorts of different styles
- Not being frustrated if someone ends up playing who I think I could play as well as/better than
Cons:
- $300 plane ticket to audition
- Crazy nerves for audition
- Huge time commitment if I make it–the worship team will play 6-10 gigs together between September 08 and December 09
- Personal struggles with whether or not I really consider myself a performance bassist or whether I just serve where needed–how much of my desire to do this is to serve a need, and how much is because I’m prideful about my abilities? Also, how comfortable will I feel playing in front of that many people? Whoo boy.
Any feelings, ideas, contributions?

Who cares if you consider yourself a performance bassist? You’d be serving where needed, and I doubt there are many people out there better than you at filling that position. As for your pride, you’re allowed to take joy in the wonderful gifts God has blessed you with, and playing bass is definitely one of those. With regard to nerves at the audition or actually playing, I think you’d manage. You played with Jason Upton after trying to eat a bee, and you’ve played concerts before, and in worship before. You love music way too much to even spend more than a half a minute focusing on the other people before you’d just be into the music and worshiping God. So, basically, as I see it, you have a long list of awesomeness pros, and the only valid cons that you have are the cost of a plane ticket and a question about time commitment. This sounds vaguely familiar…
it sounds cool, but dude i don’t know how you’d do it with all you got going on now. Do what only you can do. The other stuff, someone will fill in and that’s part of humility is believing you are replaceable. Its also a big weight off your shoulders. “appropriate smallness” as its been called. Peace man! I love you Mateo.
I sometimes watch you during worship. You are worshiping. You look very joyful. You dont look like you are performing. Aside from the fact that you are a very good bassist, I think you have the ability to lead people into worship….because that is where you are, and we want to follow. Its not pride. Its godly
I say whatever you do, do it with the bow-tie
touche ricke. touche
i will miss you tons though!
Bottom line- will you regret it if you dont try out? will you lay awake and wish you would have??
I can help you with the plane ticket…
No regrets -
much joy-
chris
I know this is sort of a closed case, but I am thinking about holding an Urbana conference at my house.

-Not being frustrated if someone ends up playing who I think I could play as well as/better than (Definitely
Cons:
…….(chirp, chirp,…cricket, cricket)
You would have to fly or drive up, but I am sure we scrape anywhere between 20 and 150 dollars, plus all the Nachos you could ever want to eat.
Seriously, I miss worshiping with you. Let’s do it again.
