  • The Hand of Adulain – Aaron Mahnke
    • See my Amazon review. It was a great, enjoyable fantasy read. The initial draft could use some editing, but the storytelling and characters are great. I was swept into the book’s world and couldn’t put the book down.
  • Invitation to Solitude and Silence – Ruth Haley Barton IVP
    • This book has been foundational in transforming the way I approach quiet time alone with God. Even with the depth I found my quiet times transformed by a good understanding of what a quiet time was, I found through reading this book that I still felt the need to perform in my time with the LORD. This book freed me from that expectation, and has left me just seeking to spend time with God each morning.
  • Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? – Beverly Daniel Tatum
    • Along with “Race Matters” and “Divided by Faith”, this is one of the most important books I’ve ever read about race, ethnicity, and race relations and racial identity development in the U.S.
  • Tribes – Seth Godin
    • Godin’s books are always a hard go for me. He has a lot of good things to say, but I come out not entirely certain what I’ve learned. I loved, and was seriously taught and inspired by, what he wrote. I’d definitely recommend it. But I think I might need to go back over the book a few times and take notes.
  • The Dip – Seth Godin
    • This book was recommended for me as I was just coming up with the idea for Staffhacker. I love the general concepts, although it feels to me he spent a lot of time saying the same thing over and over, and not a lot of time training me to overcome the dip or identify what is and isn’t a dip. But I’m not sure. It’s short–maybe I should read it again.
  • Pride and Prejudice – Jane Austen
    • Yes, I completed an entire English degree without ever having read a single Jane Austen book. When I got an iPad, seeing Pride and Prejudice for free from Project Gutenberg was too much temptation. And to be honest? I loved it. The people drove me crazy–rich snobs with nothing to do but try to sound witty–but the writing was amazing. Austen is an incredible writer, and so, like you hate a movie character but love the movie, I really loved this book.
  • A Mind for God – James Emery White IVP
    • Brief thoughts: The biggest thing this book did for me and the student leader I led it with was to fight our preconceptions against politically/socially conservative Christians. We really had to battle a little to listen to his primary points when we disagreed with so many of his cultural assumptions and secondary points. What he had to say was good, but I don’t think I’d recommend this book to anyone.
  • The Fight – John White IVP
    • Brief thoughts: I’ve gone through this book as a discipleship text with many students, and I’m going to keep going through it with them. It really led me into a new sort of practical Christian discipleship, and I see it do a lot in the lives of my students. I’ve read it 10+ times, and the LORD never stops using it to challenge and encourage me.
